WHAT IS A DPF?
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a filter designed to trap diesel particulate matter from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine.
HOW A DPF WORKS?
Using the information supplied by the differential pressure sensor and temperature sensors the vehicle determines when the DPF is becoming full of soot and initiates the regeneration process at a predetermined level which avoids it getting too blocked and causing further running problems.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY DPF BLOCKS?
If the DPF becomes blocked your vehicle will enter a limp home mode and the engine management light will illuminate. If the DPF becomes too blocked there is a potential risk of the filter overheating and causing it to catch fire. It can also have a knock on effect on other engine auxiliary components such as turbo, EGR and oil soot levels.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED, CLEANED AND REPAIRED?
It is important to have you vehicle rectified as soon as a problem occurs to avoid the DPF getting to the stage where it cannot be cleaned due to the amount of soot. The root cause of the issue will need to be determined to avoid the DPF becoming blocked prematurely.
